As we transition from our spring, which is more like a winter, cooling season will be upon us soon.  The problem is that many customers are not prepared for this transition.  There will be several weeks where virtually no HVAC will be needed followed by an abrupt and strong need for this equipment to begin its cooling season.  With coils, filters and other key components not maintained and ready, problems can occur.  It is a very common occurrence to have cooling equipment fail in the very beginning of the season due to the HVAC equipment not being maintained.  It often is not component failure but simple maintenance items that can be the difference.

The green industry has changed a percentage of its attention to water preservation issues.  This is hopeful, because water and energy are impossible to disentangle.  By performing water along with energy audits for commercial, industrial and institutional buildings will be a start in figuring out how to preserve. This will direct the passageway and put more importance on water conservation incentives as a way of dealing with threatening energy supply shortages.

The use of water of less than drinking quality inside of buildings can be used for toilets and urinal flushing, and cooling tower makeup.  Also of great importance is to promote  rainwater and gray water for recycling and reuse. Gray- water is wastewater from shower drains, bathtubs, sinks, dishwashers and washing machines.  This gray water accounts for between 50-80% of our home, offices, and schools outflow. Gray water can be reused for irrigation, toilet flushing and exterior washing.  To design the plumbing systems to allow gray water to be reused requires space for a holding tank.  If the home or facilities is under construction the cost is minimal to install with the potable water rough in.

The gray water, reclaimed water systems will persist to develop as the green movement continues to grow.  It is projected that in three to five years, gray water reuse systems will be the ordinary. • Limit the loss of expensive heated air to the outside. Use fans sparingly. In just one hour, these fans can blow away a house full of warm air.
• Keep fireplace dampers tightly closed until you prepare to light a fire. An open damper in a 48-inch square fireplace can let as much as 8% of our heat escape out the chimney.
• Lower your thermostat to about 65 degrees F during the day and 60 degrees F at night. For each degree you turn down your thermostat, you’ll save 3% on heating bills.
• When using the fireplace, open dampers in the bottom of the firebox if provided, or open the closet window about 1 inch and close the doors leading into the room. This allows more air for the fire without reducing heat loss.
• Make a draft detector by clipping a piece of tissue paper to a coat hanger. Hold the coat hanger in front of a suspected crack; any movement indicates a leak in need of caulking or weather stripping.
• Avoid heating unused areas by closing off unoccupied rooms and shutting off heat vents. (Does not apply if you have a heat pump)
• Learn about R values before you buy your insulation materials. These numbers indicate resistance of an insulation material to winter heat loss or summer heat gain.
• Consider installing storm windows and doors. Storm windows can be both energy efficient and convenient. Good windows can result in cost savings of as much as 15% a year.

Yes, the low lead legislation was signed in January by President Obama.  This means that it will be mandatory that the manufacturers change their products to abide by this federal low lead legislation.  This latest law lowers the national standard for lead in faucets, pipes and pipe fittings from 0.8% TO 0.25%.  The deadline to make these changes is January 4^th, 2014.
